統計顯示，每兩位狼瘡患者中就有一位會出現腎臟的併發症，稱為狼瘡腎炎，且此併發症可能會隨時間而惡化，導致腎衰竭，因此不可忽視。
研究顯示，穩定控制疾病活性和可能造成復發的風險因子、及早使用正確的治療介入並降低類固醇使用量可讓器官損害的機會降到最低。目前有多種藥物可供選擇，包括奎寧、疾病調節抗風濕藥物(DMARDs)及生物製劑等。吳昭儀醫師說明因為長期使用類固醇可能會增加感染的風險和其他多種副作用，患者可以和主治醫師討論選擇最適合的用藥。國際共識已經提出了新建議，大劑量類固醇僅作為疾病活動期間使用的銜接療法(bridging therapy)；針對長期使用，國際共識也進一步降低口服類固醇的每日可接受臨界劑量。亦即把類固醇的角色定義在『使用時間盡可能縮短，劑量盡可能降低；在醫師評估適合的狀態下，以停用為最終目標』。
吳昭儀醫師提醒治療方案通常需要患者與醫師共同討論，以找到症狀控制及藥物副作用之間的平衡點。因此，她呼籲患者們不要灰心，與主治醫師一起努力、穩定控制狼瘡。
